“The picture in my mind I see when I think about it all, is the color of the leaves of Carolina in the Fall”
And Todd is the best place to be at all!
Greetings from downtown Todd!
Every Autumn I am always amazed at the beauty that nature creates in the mountains. It’s like a symphony being played out in colors all around you. The colors are really starting to burst here along the river and in the higher elevations and this weekend they should all be in full color or very close to it. Especially with the low temperatures at night. Perfect fall nights that are crisp and so clear you can see the milky way. What a great time of year to come and enjoy all the mountains have to offer.
This Saturday, there is a whole lotta fun happening here in Todd with the 20th annual Todd New River Festival! The Festival starts at 9am with music, crafts, venders, and food at Cook Memorial Park in downtown Todd (across from the General Store). I have the schedule for performers at the bottom of the page here so you can be sure to turn out for your favorite band – or hang out all day and listen to great music!
Plus, that same day, (October 12th) the Todd Mercantile will be having some of our artists/craft people on hand that day to show more of their items and be available to chat with you about what they do. We’ll be sampling some of our breads and jams, etc. too! Heart of the High Country Realty will also be having an open house, so be sure to stop by.
The following Friday, October 18th we’ll be having our monthly CommUnity Contra Dance here at the Todd Mercantile – so grab your partner and the family – or come on down by yourself and learn to do-si-do with your neighbors to the lively tunes from the Laurel Creek String Band. No experience is necessary since they go over every dance before hand. The cost is $5.00 for the band for those over 12 (under is free).
Then on Saturday the 19th, Michael and Donna Fox will join us at the Todd Mercantile at 3:00pm for a bit of story telling and music. They play Appalachian Old Time music and bring with them a collection of instruments like the dulcijo, fiddle, guitar, marimbula and bodran. they also bring extra spoons and scrub boards for audience involvement and playa long! You can find out more about them at www.dulcijo.com. Sure hope you can join us – it’ll be a lot of fun for young and old and everyone in between!
As always, we hope to see you soon in Todd!

“I’ve seen sunsets on the ocean
I’ve seen the desert bloom
I’ve driven endless highways
Beneath the prairie moon
Yet the picture in my mind that I see
When I think about it all
Is the color of the leaves
In Carolina in the Fall”

Check out our new items… Tile coasters and trivets that benefit the Watauga Humane Society’s spay and neuter program. They would make a great hostess or thank you gift!
The Todd Mercantile is now a ‘Twig’ of the Ashe County Library. Check it out… Take a book, leave a book or borrow a book. We need to decorate it Todd style. Let me know if you have any ideas for decorating. We are waiting for the post that will come and make its permanent home nearby its current location.
